Usage:this is due to it possessing an extra nitrogen atom which can be readily used in the synthesis of other amino acids. therefore at these times of stress, it is important to take a glutamine supplement in order to minimise glutamine being catabolised from muscle tissue. glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the body, comprising 61% of the amino acid pool in skeletal muscle. glutamine's unique structure, containing two nitrogen side chains, consists of 19% nitrogen - making it the primary transporter of nitrogen into the muscle cell. glutamine is involved in more metabolic processes than any other amino acid. of particular importance is its role in:- immune system function, maintenance of gastro-intestinal health, regulating levels of toxic ammonia in the body, maintaining acid/alkaline balance, increasing muscle protein synthesis and counteracting catabolic processes. glutamine is also used as a fuel source - either directly as fuel for the brain or from its conversion to glucose.
