Antioxidant 58 is a non-staining antioxidant that can be used in white or dark colored rubber compounds resulting in cured protection against oxygen, heat crazing, and rubber poisoning by metals.
It is not effective for antiflexcracking (except in polychloroprene where it markedly improves flexcracking resistance) or antiozonant conditions.
Antioxidant 58 can exhibit a brightening effect on transparent goods if not used in excess of 0.50 phr.
Antioxidant 58 is primarily used to improve rubber vulcanizate heat resistance.
It can be used at a 1.5 to 4.0 phr level for this purpose.
Protection afforded by this antioxidant depends to a large extent on the efficiency of the curing system.
It is only moderately effective when used alone in sulfur cured compounds.
It helps provides maximum protection in thiuram-cured and peroxide-cured vulcanizates for oxygen, heat and steam.
Superior aging synergistic effects can be obtained when Antioxidant 58 is used in conjunction with a phenolic or amine antioxidant.
Antioxidant 58 should not be used in food contact applications as it can impart a bitter taste to food.
