PX-104, Dibutyl Phthalate, exhibits a high degree of compatability with such resins as nitrocellulose, chlorinated rubbers, ethyl cellulose, cellulose acetate butyrate, polyvinyl chloride and copolymers, and polyvinyl butyral. More limited compatibility is shown with such resins as cellulose acetate, polystyrene, vinyl acetate, and phenolic varnish resins.
Dibutyl phthalate is widely used as a plasticizer in protective coatings where several of its outstanding properties are low cost, a tendency to minimize checking and cracking, and good miscibility with both petroleum and coal tar solvents and diluents. When used with nitrocellulose, small amounts of dibutyl phthalate will result in products with good gloss and a high degree of plasticity.
Dibutyl phthalate also finds application in adhesives and films for packaging where such properties as odor, taste, and toxicity are important.
The extreme versatility of dibutyl phthalate contributes to its use in other applications where it is sometimes used as an anti-foam agent or a processing aid. It is used as an ingredient in smokeless powder to produce smoother, more uniform detonation.
