D-22
D-22 catalyst is a high-boiling liquid organotin compound which is used as an effective catalyst in the production of polyurethane foams, coatings, adhesives, and sealants. Since pure dibutyltin dilaurate is a solid at room temperature, D-22 catalyst has been specifically formulated to remain liquid at temperatures above 65'F(18'C) to permit easier handling in most applications. The residual free acid level is low and the product is noncorrosive to iron in the absence of moisture.
D-22 catalyst finds greatest use in the manufacture of rigid polyurethane foams. In applications where amine catalysis alone is inadequate, the extra activity obtained by synergistic combination of organometallics like D-22 catalyst with DABCO(=TEDA) amine catalysts permits rigid foam performance in applications demanding rapid catalysis. Examples include high-density structural foam, spray-up wall insulation and rigid board stock run at high line speeds. Even when used at levels as low as 0.1 phr based on polyol, D-22 catalyst is especially effective in promoting rapid gel and tack-free times. Tetravalent diorganotins like D-22 catalyst are known throughout the industry as promoters of the reaction of isocyanates with polyols to form polyurethanes, and the secondary crosslinking reactions to form allophonate and biuret linkages. Because of this selectivity for polymerization, D-22 catalyst is often a benchmark in the catalysis of urethane systems including two-component urethane adhesives and moisture-cure urethane coatings where the oxidative stability of tetravalent tins permits masterbatching of catalytic activity of such a masterbatch are dependent upon the presence of amines, moisture, other additives and storage temperatures. Organotin carboxylates will hydrolyze like any ester, so applications demanding specific pot lives should be laboratory screened first.
