Generic Name: Lovastatin English Name: Lovastatin Chemical name: (2S)-2-Methyl butanoic acid (1S,3R,7S,8S,8aR)-1,2,3,7,8,8a -hexahydro-3,7-dimethyl-8-[2-[(2R,4R)-tetrahydro-4-hydroxy-6-oxo-2H-pyran-2-yl]ethyl]-1-naphthalenyl ester Structural Formula: ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ Molecular Formula: C24H36O5 Molecular Weight: 404.55 Description: A white crystalline powder. Pharmacology: HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors have the similar annular or open annular structure as HMG-CoA, which is active after hydrolysis in body. Lovastatin is a specific inhibitor of HMG-CoA reductase, the enzyme which catalyzes the conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate. The conversion of HMG-CoA to mevalonate is an early step in the biosynthetic pathway for cholesterol. Lovastatin can increase LDL receptor and elevate its activity when hepatocyte cholesterol concentration is low, and a great deal LDL is taken to reduce the concentration of plasm and LCL-C. Lovastatin can also reduce the synthesis and release of VLDL.
