Silane coupling agents are bifunctional molecules with the unique and useful ability to improve the bond between organic polymers and many mineral surfaces, and to retain composite properties after prolonged exposure to moisture. Silane coupling agents are hybrid materials with the functionality of an organic reactive group at one end of the molecule and inorganic alkoxy-silane functionality at the opposite end. The most widely known use for silane coupling agents is in glass fiber-reinforced plastics. They are also useful as surface treatments for silicious minerals used to fill thermoplastic and thermoset resins. Minerals commonly treated with silanes include:
Glass beads, flakes and milled fiber
Silica (natural and manufactured)
Silicates, clays, talcs, wollastonite, mica
Aluminas (including hydrated)
Hollow silicate spheres and bubbles Using silane-treated minerals as fillers often reduces composite costs and increases composite properties such as flexural and tensile strength. In the case of injectionmolded thermoplastics, the silane treatment of the minerals often improves dispersion of the mineral in the resin.
